Be Thou My Vision

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art

Thou my best Thought, by day or by night

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word

I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord

Thou my great Father, I Thy true son

Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise

Thou mine Inheritance, now and always

Thou and Thou only, first in my heart

High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art

High King of Heaven, my victory won

May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heav’n’s Sun

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall

Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all

I love to read song lyrics like poetry. It tends to give them brand new meaning, bringing refreshment the next time you sing them. Be Thou My Vision is one my my favorite hymns of all time; both the lyrics and the tune are so well done. There are rich, beautiful scriptures that coincide with the words of this song. May you be encouraged as you read through the lyrics, and then God’s great promises through his word. I encourage you to read them slowly and meditate upon them, and then pray in a way that relates to them. I will show an example below the first set of verses to illustrate how to do this.

Be thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart

Naught be all else to me, save that thou art.

Psalm 31:3 – For you are my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me.

Psalm 143:8 – Let me hear your lovingkindness in the morning; for I trust in You; teach me the way in which I should walk, for you You I lift up my soul.

[Praying through these lyrics and passages: Lord Jesus, thank you that you are the Lord of my heart. Thank you for bringing salvation to me. God, I pray that you would be my fortress. Lead me and guide me in all the paths of my life. Help me to know how you would use me and my life to make your name great. Show me how I am to walk with you as a wife, mom, friend, and in my career. I pray, Lord, that nothing will be as great to me as You, glorifying You, and rejoicing in Your will for my life.]

Thou my best Thought, by day or by night

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Psalm 1:1-2 – Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word

I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord

Proverbs 1:7 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Thou my great Father, I Thy true son

Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one

2 Timothy 1:14 – Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.

Romans 8:11 – But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise

Thou mine Inheritance, now and always

Psalm 37:16 – Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked.

Romans 8:17 – And if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Thou and Thou only, first in my heart

High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art

Matthew 13:44 – The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

High King of Heaven, my victory won

May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s sun

1 Corinthians 15:54-57 – When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall

Still be my vision, O ruler of all.

Joshua 1:9 – Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Romans 8:38-39 – For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God is Christ Jesus our Lord.

May these words guide and bless you this week, and bring you encouragement for your Monday!
